Mr. Shupe
Don Shupe
Band


Mr. Shupe received his Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in 1973 and his Master's degree from Northwestern in 1974. He has been the band director at Libertyville H.S. since 1974. As director of bands, Mr. Shupe conducts the Freshman Band, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Marching Band and Jazz Ensemble I. He also assists with the orchestra wind section.
Mr. Shupe is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the American School Band Directors Association and the National Association of Jazz Educators. In March of 1995, Mr. Shupe was honored as "Educator of the Month" and in June of 1995, he received the Chicagoland Music Educator Award sponsored by Quinlin and Fabish Music Company. In 1998 he was voted the "Mr. Holland's Opus Award" sponsored by Bob Rogers Travel.
Mr. Shupe is active as a guest conductor for both concert band and jazz band. In 1994, he was the guest conductor of the Illinois Music Educator's Association All-State Jazz Ensemble. In 1995, Mr. Shupe was guest conductor of the Birch Creek Summer Jazz Camp. In 1998 he conducted the Senior Concert at the University of Illinois Summer Youth Music Program.
The L.H.S. Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Mr. Shupe, performed at the Illinois Music Educators All-State Conference in 1994 and 1998. In May of 1996 and 1998, the Wind Ensemble won the University of Illinois' Superstate Band Competition. Under his direction, the L.H.S. Jazz Ensemble has won many awards. Jazz Ensemble I was selected to perform at the National Band Association Convention in June of 1992 and had the honor of performing at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1982 and again in 1993.

Mr. Helvie
Dustin Helvie
Band

Dustin Helvie received his Bachelors of Music degree from the University of Iowa and Masters of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music. Before coming to Libertyville, Mr. Helvie was the Assistant Director of Bands at Clinton High School in Clinton, Iowa. There, he was responsible for the Concert Band, Pep Band, Jazz Band, Pit Orchestra, and assisting with the Royal RiverKing Marching Band under the direction of David Gaulrapp.
Mr. Helvie joined the Libertyville faculty in the fall of 1999. His responsibilities include Symphonic Band, Freshmen Band, Marching Band, Pep Band, Pit Orchestra and assisting with the Wind Ensemble. Helvie was also a member of the music faculty at Vernon Hills High School. Under his direction, the bands at Libertyville have received Superior ratings at the IHSA Organizational Contest. Recently, Mr. Helvie was selected to be the music director of the Illinois All-State Theatre production of Hairspray.

Helvie is also an active performer. Mr. Helvie has performed with the Illinois Brass Band, Chicago Brass Band, Waukegan Municipal Band and the CLC Wind Ensemble. He also performs actively as a pit orchestra musician throughout the Chicago suburbs. He serves as a clinician and adjudicator for several music festivasl. At Iowa, Helvie performed with the Hawkeye Marching Band, Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Johnson County Landmark Big Band. He also was selected as an advisor for the 500-member seven-country tour with the Iowa Ambassadors of Music. Mr. Helvie is also an active member of the International Trumpet Guild, Music Educators National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Helvie lives in Grayslake with his wife Sarah and children Xander and Jordyn.

Dr. Brown
Jeffrey D. Brown
Choir


Jeffrey D. Brown is in his seventh year at Libertyville High School as Director of Choirs. There are three curricular choirs at LHS, the Concert Choir, Bel Canto, & Chorale, and four co-curricular vocal ensembles, the Master Singers, Belle Choir, Treblemakers, and Cleftomaniacs. There are over 185 students involved in choir at LHS. Dr. Brown is also the vocal director for the fall musical.
Dr. Brown holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. The degree was completed in May of 2002 under the direction of Dr. Charles K. Smith and Dr. Jonathan Reed. While in residence at Michigan State, he conducted the 115 voice Women's Glee Club, assisted the University Chorale, coordinated the graduate Practicum Choir, and conducted the MSU Chamber Choir, an ensemble made of the university's top undergraduate music majors. Other responsibilities included assisting the State Singers, the MSU Opera Chorus, and recruiting for the choral department
A Texas native, Dr. Brown holds Bachelors (1993) and Masters (1995) degrees in music from Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. He has directed church choirs in Lansing, MI, Boston, MA, and Nacogdoches, TX. He currently lives in Libertyville with his daughter Alexandria. He is also the choir director at the United Methodist Church of Libertyville.

MarinoJeremy Marino
Orchestra / AP Music Theory


Jeremy Marino began teaching at Libertyville High School in the Fall of 1999. His duties include rehearsing up to three orchestras, preparing string quartets and small ensembles, some private instruction, running sectionals and teaching AP Music Theory. Under his direction, the Libertyville High School Orchestras have consistently rated among the best in the state of Illinois and the Symphony Orchestra was invited to perform at the prestigious Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in December 2004.
Before coming to Libertyville, Mr. Marino attended Northwestern University where he studied percussion performance and obtained a Bachelor's in Music Education and Percussion Performance('97) and a Master's Degree in Percussion Performance('99).
As a percussionist, Mr. Marino performed as a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, won a concerto competition at the University of Texas-Austin, performed at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention's Showcase Concert as a member of the Northwestern University Percussion Ensemble, and gave masterclasses and lessons to many of the underclassmen. As a conductor, Mr. Marino has studied with Jerry Junkin at UT-Austin, and Northwestern's Dr. Mallory Thomson, and in April of 1999 produced and conducted a concert of twentieth-century music including George Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children.

HeathJason Heath
Orchestra / Band


Jason Heath is an active double bass performer, educator, blogger, and podcaster. His writing, blogging and podcasting have been featured in the New Yorker, International Musician, TimeOut Chicago, Double Bassist Magazine, The Scroll, The Engaging Brand, Bass World, and the Adjunct Advocate. He is on the board of directors for the International Society of Bassists, a member of the blogging network Inside the Arts, and is a staff writer for Bass Musician Magazine. He has served on the faculties of DePaul University, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and Trinity International University, and he is a frequent guest speaker for a variety of organizations.

A native of South Dakota, Jason joined the bass sections of the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra and Sioux City Symphony Orchestra at the age of fifteen. He is a member of the Elgin Symphony and previously served as co-principal bass of the IRIS Orchestra in Memphis, Tennessee and assistant principal bass of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. Jason has also performed with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Symphony, Chicago Opera Theater, Chicago Sinfonietta, Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and Joffrey Ballet Orchestra. Jason has toured internationally with the American-Russian Young Artists Orchestra, Pacific Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, and he has also performed with the Spoleto USA Festival, Britt Music Festival, and Des Moines Metro Opera.
